Information on accessibility for your gamescom stand
As part of gamescom's understanding of itself as a "safe haven" for our diverse community, the subject of accessibility is particularly close to our hearts. Consequently, we want to further improve the experience for people with mobility impairments and wheelchair users at gamescom.
For this reason, a self-commitment to step-free access to the stand area is required from gamescom 2024 onwards.
Step-free access to the stand space
Following regulations are mandatory:
- The integration of a step-free access in the entrance area of the stand with the objective that the stand is accessible for wheelchair users and can be grasped in its entirety
- The step-free access must be located within the stand area; it is strictly forbidden to adjoin the stand space in the aisle area
- The step-free access is mandatory from a height difference of 2 cm
- The gradient must not exceed 10%
- From a height increase of 19 cm, the following is also necessary:
- Lateral edges should be provided as fall protection
- A handrail in accordance with the technical guidelines
Additional recommendation:
- Height differences of up to 2 cm should provide a beveled area to facilitate access
- (Tripping) edges smaller than 5mm should be taped off
- A usable width of 100 cm should be available on inclines
How to measure:
- Measurement example: For an increase to 8 cm with a 6% incline, the length measured horizontally must be 133 cm
- The gradient of a slope is given in %, not in degrees°
Further recommendations on the accessibility of stands
Accessibility for wheelchair users
In addition to the necessary integration of a step-free access in the entrance area of the stand, we also recommend providing accessibility for wheelchair users to individual areas of the stand. This can include, for example
- gaming terminals: height-adjustable, tiltable screen
- Sufficient space for larger, electric wheelchairs to turn and drive through aisles and gaming terminals on the stand
- Stages:
- Step-free access to stages if community activities are planned on them that require visitors to reach the stage
- Selected areas for wheelchair users in the audience area in front of stages
- Photo-Opps: Ensure accessibility to photo motifs
- Waiting Queue:
- Separate queue for wheelchair users
- Priority treatment of wheelchair users
- Sufficient width of the queue on the stand space
Needs of people with other impairments
In addition to people who use mobility aids and wheelchairs, we also recommend that the needs of people with other impairments are also taken into account. These include the following measures, for example
- Non-slip floor coverings that are easy to walk and drive on
- Movement areas for wheelchairs
- Sufficient seating
- Accessible information and communication for people with various impairments
- Tactile elements, e.g. floor guidance systems
- Sensory aids (earplugs, glasses, etc.)
- Trained staff who look after people with special needs
- Accessible hardware such as input devices
- Avoidance of obstacles on the paths
- Good lighting to ensure that stepless entrances, paths and obstacles are clearly visible
- Documents in Braille
- Provision of sign language on stages or in livestream, ideally in German & English
